President’s Letter: Connecting to our Community through Birding

By Lori Danielson

At our annual board retreat in January, one of the goals the board set for the year was to strengthen Eastside Audubon’s birding program. We’d like to reach more people in our community by offering a wider variety of field trips and bird walks, to more places, and with more trip leaders. We’ve already started this work by creating a field trip leader apprentice program to nurture and support new trip leaders, getting input from current trip leaders to create the framework. We’ll be kicking off the program this spring.

In this month’s Corvid Crier, you will find a survey asking for your feedback regarding offering new and exciting birding experiences in the future. Your feedback is essential as we curate these birding and nature experiences in our service area and across the Puget Sound. I encourage you to share your thoughts by filling out our participation survey.

Additionally, we’re also seeking to fill our Birding Chair position on the board. The person filling this role (or two people as co-chairs) will ensure the trip leader apprentice program is starting strong and running smoothly, as well as contribute other ideas to increase our birding trip offerings and appeal.

Sponsoring bird watching trips is an important means of serving our community, along with conservation and education. It’s one way that we connect people to nature. If you’d like more information about the trip leader apprentice program or Birding Chair role, contact me at president@eastsideaudubon.org
